Or, "If you build it they will come" ... I want to tell you about an internet marketer named Mike Enlow.

Years ago he placed a classified ad offering to mail people 100 dollar bills for free. People only needed to send him $10.95 to cover overnight shipping, and he would literally send them 10 times their money, overnight.

This is also important: people were allowed to purchase as many $100 bills for $10.95 as they wanted.

You think Mike would have gone bankrupt within a few days, right? Lost his life savings and foreclosed on his home?

Wrong. No one responded to the offer. Zero takers.

And YOU might have experienced something similar in your own sales letters, web pages, blog posts, or forum posts. No one is listening.

That's Because You Aren't Presenting The "Right" Argument!

You need to solve a problem. You need to credentialize yourself and show proof.

You need to take a couple of simple steps that are easy once you know them, but if you don't know them -- you're dead in the water!

  • Are you offering a paid membership? Then you need a sales letter!
  • Promoting someone else as an affiliate? You STILL need a sales letter!
  • Offering a low-ticket or high-ticket webinar training class? You DEFINITELY need a sales letter!
  • Do you have a free report I might download? Then you need a sales letter (YES, really!)

Even if you want fancy stuff like WordPress sales letters or video sales letters, make a simple sales letter FIRST! You'll thank me later.

Ah-Ha Moment #9:
Expect Your Sales Letter To Convert At 1 Percent

Let's say at this point, you have a sales letter. Maybe you've even tried your hand at one. Now what? You need traffic.

Eyeballs looking at that offer, who WANT to be there and WANT you to convice them to buy right now.

You have unlimited access to this thing called the Internet where more people have access to you now than at any point in human history.

The big question is, how many people will opt-in to your squeeze page? How many will buy from your order page?

If you are marketing to the right crowd, you can expect a 1 percent conversion rate. That means if 100 people see your sales letter, 99 people will leave but 1 of them will buy.

This is a great deal compared to direct mail. It doesn't cost anything. You make instant changes. You can add to the offer or change it over time.

We'll talk about how to use tools like autoresponders to boost you much higher than one percent in a little while.

But first, I want you to realize how similar we are. Years ago, I was popular on one particular high-traffic forum, and I only had a handful of web pages out there.

The owner of the forum decided to do me a huge favor and link to my web site, from the front page of his forum.

I Saw The Clicks Coming In, And I Panicked!

All these hungry people were rolling onto my web site, but there was no place to buy. No place to opt-in. No newsletter to subscribe to.

I did something I never would have thought of otherwise... I put my web page behind a forced opt-in page.

In other words, when someone came to my web site, they were presented with nothing to do but enter their name and email address to get access. Keep in mind this was before terms like "name squeeze" or "squeeze page" even existed.

Guess what happened?

  • Every three minutes, my email popped up that I had a new subscriber on my list.
  • I removed some extra links on the page. Now, a new subscriber every two minutes.
  • I enlarged the opt-in form to make the text box HUGE and the subscribe button HUGE -- again, this was before I'd seen this done anywhere -- now, a new subscriber every single minute, for hours.

These changes only took me a few minutes to make. But these little changes can make a massive difference to the number of subscribers and sales you'll get!

Ah-Ha Moment #8:
You Can't, Shouldn't, and Won't Do It All Yourself

Do you think in those few moments, I wrote newsletter software myself to capture the emails and send messages to them? Of course not.

You Use PHP Every Day... Without Realizing It!

Most people don't think, or understand, how the Internet "works." When you stream a video, update your Twitter page, or load a web page (like this one), where does it actually come from?

That web page is stored on a hard drive, on a computer, in a very large building somewhere. You type a URL or click a link and you "somehow" contact that computer and it serves up the page for you.

You don't know all the steps it took to get there. You don't need to know. All that's important is that it simply "does it!"

The same is true for all the web sites you use. Your autoresponder software. Your favorite social network. That blog you update.

Almost all of them are run using PHP. PHP is the "magic stuff" that makes the page change (dynamic) instead of the plain unchanging HTML pages you're used to.

  • When you leave a comment on someone's WordPress blog, that's PHP
  • When you leave a message on someone's Facebook fan page, that's PHP
  • When you type in a search on Yahoo! and it lists the results for the exact words you typed, that's PHP!

You are probably "partly" computer literate and you didn't even know it. You have technical know-how in a ton of areas.

You don't have to "know" how to code PHP, only to use and adjust PHP... to apply it to your sales letter and opt-in pages to get you more sales.

Re-Use Your Templates Instead Of Learning "Frameworks" To Do It Faster And Better Every Time

As you discover more about PHP, you're going to find out how you can use it.

For example, I use PHP all the time to run time-limited special offers. The introductory price is low for a limited time, but after a few days... poof, the price has changed all on a timer, without me having to do anything.

"The Right Words Overcome a Mediocre Look-and-Feel"

Words sell, not graphics.

Get the look-and-feel right, by all means. But after that... it's words that sell!

To sell more, write better. Make the most productive use of words, words that address the needs and wants of your customers.

I might place a countdown timer underneath a video to show people they'd better watch it now, it's being taken down soon.

I'll show how many spots are remaining in a live training course. Change my sales letter based on the time of year, how long my offer has been live or where my visitors came from.

And I can apply any of these tactics within seconds, to any of my web pages that I choose. How did I do this so fast? Did I code a new, complicated language on top of PHP?

Heck no. I used a little thing called copy and paste.

If I want to use a simple red-green order button that's been tested and proven to increase conversions by 46 percent... I copy and paste.

If I want to apply any of the hundreds of marketing secrets I've got hidden away in my private vault, I copy and paste.

If I want to setup a new sales letter, download page, "thank you for subscribing" page, upsell page, forced optin page, or webinar registration page, I just copy and paste to re-use what I already have.

No Sense In Making It Complicated, Right? RIGHT!

You use your old template, modify it to your needs, and maybe try something new. This way, you're always improving.

  • Microsoft doesn't start everything from scratch with every version of Windows... they build on the previous version
  • Apple doesn't start from scratch with every new iPhone... they develop a slightly better battery, screen, software, transmitter with each version
  • Google doesn't roll out Google Search or Gmail and then stop... they add improvements over time

Now that you know you simply need to re-use what you have, instead of making it complicated... you're ready to be discover the pattern:

Formula + Template + Course-Correction = Success!

  • You use the formula of adding a headline, making a simple sales argument and asking them to take action
  • You copy and paste it into a template so it looks pretty and has the functionality (i.e. countdown timer) that's easy with PHP
  • You "get it out there" and course-correct to see what gets you more sales

The thing that makes most of your competition fail (but hopefully not you) is that most people make things too complicated.

"They" fail to follow a step-by-step formula!

Without a template, "they" reinvent the wheel every time they want a sales letter, logo, optin page or web site.

And "they" try to get everything right the first time.

You don't want to get it right the first time. That's impossible. It's more important to have SOMETHING out there that's good enough for now.

Ah-Ha Moment #5:
Blindly Copy And Paste, Get It Working First, Before Changing Things Around

Even NASA, arguably the safest and most bug-free software developer out there, has fail space probes and crashed shuttles that cost billions of dollars.

Apple Inc. has released many updates to its iTunes software, MacOS operating system and iOS mobile phone software.

WordPress blogging software has been revised literally thousands of times.

  • then a human...
  • then performed a spacewalk...
  • then crashed a probe onto the Moon...

MacOS is past version TEN. Half a dozen iPhones and dozens of iPod variations have been released.

Google once tested 41 different shades of blue on a web page and discovered that one particular color caused a lot more people to download their toolbar, adding up to millions of extra downloads they would have missed out on.

What does this all mean for you? It means instead of getting ahead of yourself, you should release SOMETHING as fast as possible and then improve it once it's live. Course correct!

This is easier than it sounds, since someone out there has probably been your "crash dummy" and has tested it for you...

Everything You Want Done, Has Already Been Done

Just about everything you've seen happen in marketing, from autoresponders, social marketing, blogging, and membership sites, has all happened before. It's simply a matter of what's popular right now.

If you still don't believe me when I say there are no new ideas under the sun, I want you to look at the 30 most profitable movies in the past 10 years.

Only TWO of those 30 were "original" movies: "Finding Nemo" which ranked 15th place and "Kung Fu Panda" in 30th place.

The rest were..

  • based on a book: The Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or...
  • based on a TV show or comic: The Dark Knight, Transformers, Spiderman, or...
  • sequels to other movies: Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Star Wars 3, Shrek 2

Look at what happened... something proved itself to sell well in the marketplace and a movie studio created version 2.0... the movie based on the book, the remake or the sequel.

That's what you need to do. Prove you're in a profitable niche. Prove your product (that solves a problem) sells.

Get testimonials to add to the sales letter. Add some of these PHP "conversion boosters" to get even more sales. THEN worry about taking over the world with version 2.0.

Test the market FIRST.

You Can't, Shouldn't, And Won't Learn It All At Once

Just calm down. It's really NOT that hard.

It's only hard if you try to apply everything at once. Or use one of those all-in-one solutions that try to run your autoresponder, sales letter, payment processor, upsell system, and download delivery in one piece of software. Stay far away from those.

You need to copy and paste to re-use your old templates for new projects.

If you don't understand something, leave it alone.

There were so many cool things that I've always wanted to do on my sites but never understood - I have a better understanding of what is possible now.

I am going to plan a new structure throughout my existing sites and slowly upgrade each and every one of them with these new ideas and technology. Starting with the new paper template!

I'm going to implement the countdown function and protection functions. Implementing the above the fold button design. And using these scripts to my advantage to allow the user have a better experience.

If the date is close to Valentine's Day, you can create a headline that says something about valentine's day, and relate it to your promotion. When it gets close to Halloween, it will change to a headline related to halloween instead.

When there is no holiday near, it's just the normal headline you've run.

Let me give you an example. Let's say you had a headline that says "Make Money In 7 Days Or Less!". Just set the script so that 7 days before halloween it would say "Make Money Before Halloween!". Then set it so that 7 days before Thanksgiving it says "Make money Before Thanksgiving!"

And it doesn't just have to be related to holidays. You can make it say whatever you want, depending on the date. It could be "Make Money Before Taxes Are Due On April 15th!" or whatever.

This script is perfect to grab the attention of your reader, which is half the battle in copywriting.
